Bird DNA Testing

DNA sexing is the best method for determining the sex of avian monomorphic species for bird owners/veterinarians as it is accurate, efficient, time-saving and economical. Sex in bird is assigned genetically. Female birds are the heterogametic sex and possess ZW sex chromosomes while the male birds possess ZZ. The PCR test is designed for a specific DNA region on these chromosomes. Since the females possess the two different sex chromosomes, the PCR product will result in two bands, one from each sex chromosome. The male birds on the other hand will have only one band.

GeneTech's test is designed to work with feather or even shell membrane as well, in addition to the usual way of determining sex from a blood sample.

Our protocol is designed to be extremely sensitive and to work on a wide variety of bird species (about 50 different monomorphic birds). The protocol is derived from latest research work and is based on PCR technology using multiple primers so the same test works for a large number of species with a short turn-around-time for the result.
